LASHER

After almost a year of hard work, dedication, devotion, and loads of eye
strain, I finally got finished with Anne Rice's novel "The Witching Hour"
in December of last year. At over 1,000 pages, reading it was obviously
a pretty massive undertaking, but I managed, only to have it end in a way
that made no sense at all. (sigh) So, of course, the sequel was at the very
top of my Christmas list. (I don't know how many of you remember seeing the
movie "2001: A Space Odyssey" after all its publicity, only to leave the
theater dazed and confused. This was kind of like that.)
Anyway, I received the book "Lasher" from my husband as a Christmas present.
I began reading it that very night, thinking that all things would be made
clear to me. Well, the book did explain all the questions I had about the
first book. The only problem was that it did so with obvious plot contrivances
that would make the most jaded of mystery novelists cringe. For example,
the book "The Witching Hour" alluded several dozen times to the nature of
Lasher, giving the reader some semblance of feeling as to who he was. This
type of allusion was continued through the first 350 or so pages (out of about
500) of the book "Lasher". Then all of a sudden, it is revealed to the
reader that, obviously, the author was wrong about his nature all along,
and we should have seen it coming. Needless to say, I was somewhat annoyed
by this turn of events.
Both "The Witching Hour" and "Lasher" were compelling reading, as are
most of the books by Anne Rice that I've read, but I've probably gotten
less satisfaction out of the resolutions of these books than I have of
any book since Jersey Kosinski's "The Painted Bird". About the only
thing that was satisfactory about the ending was that it was a definite
ending. There were no ends left untied, leaving a possibility of a
second sequel.
My rating (out of a possible 10) 4
